Pakistan warns Iran to rein in Houthis as Riyadh strikes back
The message follows Houthi strikes that wounded 73 people and raised fears the conflict could spread beyond Saudi Arabia, sources said.
- On Tuesday, Pakistan delivered a warning to Iran on behalf of Saudi Arabia, urging Tehran to rein in its Yemeni Houthi allies. A senior Iranian official confirmed the message but responded that "Iran does not control the Houthis."
- The warning follows a major Houthi strike on an airbase in Khamis Mushait and nearby oil infrastructure on Tuesday, wounding 73 people. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree warned that subsequent Saudi airstrikes would "not go unanswered and unpunished."
- Attacks spilling into the kingdom could trigger a joint security arrangement involving Riyadh, Ankara, and Islamabad, warned Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. "An aggression on one country will be considered an aggression on all three countries," Asif said on Pakistani TV.
- Officials in Islamabad stressed any military role remains limited to defending Saudi territory, with no plans for ground combat in Yemen. A diplomat told Reuters that Pakistan "will pursue a diplomatic solution for now."
- President Donald Trump maintains the United States blockade on Iranian ports, believing sustained economic coercion is the most effective path to negotiations. Saudi officials do not expect Houthi attacks to force Washington to lift the blockade.
