Pakistan protests to Afghanistan over suicide attack that killed 15 officers
Pakistan says evidence from the attack points to militants in Afghanistan as tensions with Kabul persist after a group claimed responsibility.
On Monday, Pakistan summoned a senior Afghan diplomat to lodge a formal protest over a suicide attack in the country's northwest that killed 15 police officers.
Islamabad blamed the late Saturday attack on the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, a militant group Pakistani authorities accuse the Afghan Taliban of sheltering.
The assault in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, involved a suicide bomber detonating an explosives-laden vehicle near a security post; a splinter group, Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, claimed responsibility, though Islamabad suspects a TTP front.
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry stated the attack was "masterminded by terrorists residing in Afghanistan," adding that Islamabad "reserves the right to respond decisively against the perpetrators of this barbaric act."
Kabul denies allowing militants to use Afghan soil for attacks; however, sporadic cross-border clashes persist despite peace talks mediated by China in April.
