PacifiCorp Will Pay $575M to Settle US Government Wildfire Claims
The $575 million settlement reimburses fire suppression costs and aids restoration of 290,000 acres of federal lands impacted by six wildfires, DOJ said.
- The Department of Justice announced yesterday that PacifiCorp agreed to a $575 million settlement to resolve federal claims over six wildfires in Oregon and California.
- The four Oregon fires began around Labor Day 2020, including the 242 fire and Archie Creek fire, while California's Slater Fire started Sept. 8, 2020, and the McKinney Fire on July 29, 2022.
- Some of the settlement funds will go to the USFS and BLM to restore 290,000 acres of burned public land and reimburse the United States for firefighting costs, including nearly $240 million tied to California fires.
- The settlement adds to more than $1.6 billion the utility has agreed to pay to about 4,200 claimants, despite PacifiCorp's ongoing denial of liability, as it faces legal and financial fallout.
- Setting aside the Beachie Creek/Santiam Canyon fire, nearly 90% of known claims are settled, with over $2.2 billion in claims resolved, and more than 1,500 plaintiffs scheduled for trial through March 2028, while PacifiCorp's appeal continues in state court.
