NHRA Northwest Nationals Roar at Pacific Raceways in Kent
Doug Kalitta and J.R. Todd each won their first race of the season as Kalitta Motorsports completed the western swing sweep.
From July 24-26, Michigan-based Kalitta Motorsports swept the NHRA Muckleshoot Casino Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Kent, with Doug Kalitta winning his third Top Fuel event this year and J.R. Todd capturing his first Funny Car victory of the season.
Kalitta advanced to the finals after points leader Shawn Langdon was eliminated by Justin Ashley in the round of 16, continuing momentum from his previous Sonoma victory where qualifying saw only Billy Torrence and Josh Hart break the 3.70-second barrier.
In the Top Fuel final, Kalitta posted 3.677 at 338.43 mph to defeat Leah Pruitt's 3.689 at 333.49 mph, after dispatching Puyallup's Shawn Reed and overcoming Antron Brown in the semifinals when Brown blew a cylinder.
Dallas Glenn's three-year streak of reaching the finals ended when Greg Stanfield defeated him in Pro Stock semifinals; Greg Anderson beat Stanfield to move eight points clear in the standings, while J.R. Todd jumped from fifth to third in Funny Car points.
The NHRA is off to Brainard, Minnesota on Aug. 20-22 following a three-week break after Northwest Nationals, allowing teams to prepare for the next Mission Foods Drag Racing Series event.
