Pa. Trooper Fatally Hit by Tractor-Trailer on I-81 in Schuylkill County

The trooper was conducting a commercial vehicle safety inspection when a passing truck struck him and caught fire, closing all southbound lanes.

  • On Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Michael Pahira was killed after a tractor-trailer struck him during a commercial vehicle inspection on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County near mile marker 119 around 7 a.m.
  • Investigators said a passing tractor-trailer veered off the roadway, striking Pahira's marked inspection vehicle and pushing it into the truck he was inspecting, trapping him beneath the burning wreckage.
  • Emergency responders worked for approximately 90 minutes to save Pahira, but he never regained consciousness; Acting Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner George Bivens called him "an outstanding trooper" who "died a hero."
  • Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags lowered to half-staff and honored Pahira as a "good man" and "good cop," while authorities investigate the crash as the striking vehicle's driver remains hospitalized.
  • Pahira, a 20-year veteran assigned to the Frackville barracks, became the 105th member of the Pennsylvania State Police to die in the line of duty, honored by first responders beneath an American flag on Route 61 in Pottsville.
