Pa. electricity prices rising Dec. 1: PPL, Met-Ed and PECO customers will see higher bills

Energy supply rates for PPL and Met-Ed customers will rise 3.7% and 8.9% respectively, reflecting statewide demand growth and higher natural gas prices, the PUC said.

  • The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission said supply prices for PUC-regulated utilities will increase starting December 1st, affecting PPL and Met-Ed customers, among others.
  • Rising wholesale costs on the PJM Interconnection LLC grid mean supply prices increase due to surging demand from data centers and electric vehicles and limited new generation.
  • For example, a 1,000 kWh household will pay $4.63 more to PPL and $10.62 more to Met-Ed, as their residential PTC rises from $0.1040 to $0.11024 per kWh.
  • The PUC recommends households should note that PPL's proposed distribution rate increase could raise a 918 kWh monthly bill from $177.01 to $189.40, with a final decision due by July 1, 2026.
  • The PUC has scheduled four in-person and two telephonic hearings in December to consider PPL's proposal, with a final decision due by July 1, 2025, affecting about 1.5 million customers.
