Oz: Millions may be falsely enrolled in ObamaCare
Enrollment may fall from 23 million to 19 million due to fraud, mistaken sign-ups, and improper tax credit use, Dr. Oz said during ACA marketplace review.
- On March 10, 2026, Mehmet Oz, CMS Administrator and the Trump administration's top official overseeing the Affordable Care Act, said millions may be improperly enrolled and expects enrollment to fall to around 19 million after about 23 million signed up this year.
- Citing enrollment mechanics, the administration pointed to fraud, mistaken or duplicate enrollments, improper tax-credit awards, and some choosing ACA plans over Medicaid or employer-sponsored coverage, Oz said.
- The administration cited prior estimates and enforcement actions, including last year's claim of 4 million to 5 million improper enrollments costing $20 billion, and last month's withholding of $259 million in Medicaid funding for Minnesota, which Democrats called politically motivated.
- The drop in ACA enrollment this year resulted from Congress failing to extend enhanced tax credits, while February proposals aim to attract younger, healthier people, though KFF warns they may also draw older adults.
- Amid debates over costs, KFF data show average deductibles for catastrophic plans in 2026 are $10,600 for individuals and $21,200 for families, while Oz disputed the $31,000 family deductible estimate and experts caution fraud scale may be smaller.
