Tommy Robinson set to debate 'suspicion' of Islam at Oxford Union despite outcry
The student debate society rejected a motion to disinvite Tommy Robinson, keeping the Islam debate on its schedule despite backlash from faith leaders and politicians.
The Oxford Union is scheduled to host far-right activist Tommy Robinson for a debate titled "The West Is Right To Be Suspicious Of Islam" on June 17, after a motion to disinvite him failed last week.
Faith leaders including Bishop of Oxford Steven Croft and Oxford Foundation Imam Monawar Hussain said they were "disturbed and saddened" by the invitation, while Oxford East MP Anneliese Dodds accused the union of providing a "loudspeaker" to the far right.
Ian McKendrick of Oxford Stand Up To Racism accused Yaxley-Lennon of inciting "violent race riots" in Southampton, Belfast, and Glasgow, while researcher Dr. Darja Wischerath linked his Telegram channel to rhetoric that can legitimize violence.
President Arwa Elrayess stated she is "very much looking forward" to the debate, where members will have a chance to "challenge those speakers" during the event.
The debate was previously delayed last month following significant outcry, and critics continue to warn that the platform will serve as a "rally for Tommy Robinson.
