New Protest Planned in Oxford in Response to Tommy Robinson's Arrival Today
Oxford Union says the postponed debate will proceed with six speakers as police close streets and prepare for a large protest.
On Wednesday, the Oxford Union Society proceeded with its rescheduled debate featuring Tommy Robinson, Laurence Fox, Jacob Rees-Mogg, and Jonathan Sacerdoti debating the motion on Islam and Western suspicion.
Originally scheduled for May 28, the event was postponed following significant public outcry regarding Robinson's involvement and concerns over the inflammatory debate topic.
Significant road closures and police presence marked Wednesday in Oxford city centre, as local businesses including The Jolly Farmers and The White Rabbit closed from 3.30pm in solidarity.
Local Lib Dem MP Layla Moran condemned the event on Tuesday, while Oxford City Council leader Susan Brown called for the Oxford Union to cover the substantial security costs.
The Bishop of Oxford, Steven Croft, and Imam Monawar Hussain called for invitations to be withdrawn, citing the debate motion questioning Western suspicion of Islam and duty of care to faith communities.
