XL Bully Owner Jailed After Man, 84, Fatally Mauled
Garner was convicted of owning a dangerously out-of-control dog and two banned XL bullies after 84-year-old John McColl died from catastrophic injuries.
- On Friday, Liverpool Crown Court sentenced 31-year-old Sean Garner to 12 years in prison after his unregistered XL Bully, Toretto, fatally mauled 84-year-old John McColl in Warrington, Cheshire, on February 24, 2025.
- McColl inadvertently walked onto Garner's driveway after leaving a pub, where Toretto was secured only by a latch; Garner claimed the dog had been locked in a shed, a claim prosecutors dismissed as absurd.
- Armed police shot Toretto 10 times to end the 45-minute attack, during which the dog stood guard over McColl and prevented neighbours from helping. Officers who responded required counseling for flashbacks.
- Judge Brian Cummings KC stated any remorse was "nullified by these offensive lies," while victim's granddaughter Kelly Percival told Garner: "You robbed us of our dad, grandad, great-grandad, but you don't care."
- Garner received a 15-year ban from keeping dogs and faced prosecution highlighting his "reckless disregard for the law," including prior convictions for driving and drugs offences and misleading his landlord about owning banned XL bullies.
