Owen McCown throws 3 TD passes, UTSA opens season with 45-16 win over Vaqueros
McCown completed 22 of 27 passes for 275 yards as the Roadrunners scored three touchdowns of more than 50 yards.
- On Saturday, the Roadrunners defeated the Vaqueros 45-16 at the Alamodome in their season opener. Former Rusk Eagle Owen McCown led UTSA's offense, throwing for three touchdowns.
- The Vaqueros played an FBS opponent for the first time in program history. UTRGV competes in the Southland Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision, the lower tier of Division college football.
- McCown finished with 275 yards and an 81% completion rate, while the Roadrunners scored three touchdowns over 50 yards. Ahamad Chapman added a 49-yard pick-6.
- UTRGV organized a trip for 100 students to attend the game. Activities director Edna Zambrano said the event was an opportunity for South Texas to "Rally the Valley."
- UTSA travels to San Marcos to face rival Texas State on September 12. The Vaqueros continue their road trip next Saturday at 6 p.m. against Nicholls State in their Southland Conference opener.
