DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, JUL 17 – House Oversight Chair James Comer urges quick D.C. Council approval of a $3.7 billion RFK stadium redevelopment deal that includes $1.1 billion public funds and private investment.
- Kentucky Rep. James Comer, chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, sent a letter urging swift approval of the $3.7 billion RFK stadium deal, addressed to Council Chair Phil Mendelson, before the August recess.
- A July 15 deadline set by Mayor Muriel Bowser and Josh Harris for the Council to act looms as the Council adjourned last week without voting, despite the expiration of the exclusive negotiation period Tuesday.
- Homes Not Stadiums is pursuing a ballot initiative to block RFK Campus leasing, pending a Board of Elections decision and Council reviews, with the measure poised to influence results if funding isn’t secured by Aug. 8.
- Phil Mendelson said, `We're moving as quickly as possible`, as the Council approved one of two votes for $1.1 billion in public funding on Monday.
- With future milestones in mind, hearings start July 29 and groundbreaking follows next year, ahead of a 2030 stadium opening.
