Overdue hiker walks out of Vancouver Island bush as rescuers plan his search

VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 14 – After four days lost, experienced hiker Dallin Beaumier walked out of rough terrain on Vancouver Island before rescuers arrived, demonstrating strong survival skills, rescuers said.

  • On July 8, Beaumier emerged at the Della Falls trailhead after four days of bushwhacking, following a wrong turn, and walked out on his own.
  • Amid earning his Red Seal, Beaumier drove a low-clearance 2001 Chevy Cavalier onto a remote logging road, but a cracked oil pan left it inoperable.
  • `I do have a lot of outdoors experience,` Beaumier said, emphasizing his detailed trip plan with his father and his preparedness.
  • Alberni Valley Rescue Squad volunteers dispatched a helicopter to Della Falls and distributed his photo, while Richard Johns said `It was obviously quite a shock.`
  • Despite the ordeal, Beaumier said he plans to return for more adventures and recalls encountering a bear in 30-plus-degree heat, Richard Johns advised carrying satellite communicators like inReach or SPOT.
