Over 5,000 people trapped in Myanmar scam centres near Thai border, rights group says
The centers generate billions of dollars a year and many victims were trafficked or tricked into forced fraud work, the United Nations said.
On June 23, the Thailand-based Civil Society Network for Human Trafficking Victim Assistance reported that more than 5,300 people remain trapped in online scam centers near the Myanmar-Thailand border.
Victims are confined at four locations controlled by the Myanmar Democratic Karen Buddhist Army militia, continuing operations despite a multinational crackdown last year that freed 5,000 people.
The group estimates around 1,600 Chinese nationals and 200 Burmese are among those held, alongside citizens from Brazil and Kenya, enduring torture, sexual abuse, and forced labor.
In a letter sent Monday, the CSNHTV urged Thai police to take action; however, DKBA officials and Myanmar's military-backed government did not respond to requests for comment.
The CSNHTV warned, "Many of these compounds have yet to be dismantled or subjected to rescue operations," while syndicates generate billions annually, harming victims in the United States and Europe since COVID-19.
Human rights groups have revealed that more than 5,000 victims of scammers are still being held captive in call centers located along the Myanmar-Thailand border, and are calling for help for these people.
