Three Facing Smuggling-Related Charges After 44 Migrants Intercepted in Quebec: CBSA
STANSTEAD, QUEBEC, CANADA, AUG 4 – Three suspects charged under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act after police found 44 mostly Haitian migrants in a confined truck near the border, CBSA said.
- Overnight Sunday, Royal Canadian Mounted Police intercepted a cube van in Stanstead, Quebec, with 44 asylum seekers and three alleged smugglers, RCMP spokesperson Charles Poirier said.
- Authorities say the three accused have been charged under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Customs Act for aiding and facilitating irregular entry.
- Amid the crossing attempt, officers uncovered migrants, including a pregnant woman and children as young as four, in dehydrated, cramped conditions with no air or water, forcing them to stand.
- Migrants were transferred to the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle regional processing centre, where the three suspects will remain detained until their case returns Wednesday and are expected back on Aug. 6.
- With asylum requests surging, Bégin told Radio-Canada that 'It is highly likely that several migrants will be returned to the United States in the coming hours,' as over 3,000 requests were registered at Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle in July 2025.
