Outdoor retailer La Cordée closes after more than 70 years in business

CAA said nine South Central Ontario locations have closed in 2026, and the Sault Ste. Marie store will eliminate jobs.

  • The Canadian Automobile Association announced today the permanent closure of its Sault Ste. Marie store on Oct. 22, ending operations at 154 Great Northern Road after the not-for-profit organization operated downtown locations for at least 31 years.
  • Nine CAA South Central Ontario stores have closed in 2026, with planned closures in Sault, Oshawa, Barrie and Newmarket pushing the total to more than a dozen for the year. Across the province, locations in Belleville, Markham, Leamington, Windsor, Orillia, St. Thomas, Simcoe, Owen Sound and Brampton have also shuttered.
  • CAA said the decision reflects the "broader evolution of the retail landscape" as members choose digital and remote options for service ahead of physical storefronts. Members can continue accessing services through the call centre and online at caasco.ca.
  • Jobs will be eliminated with the Sault closure, but CAA did not clarify how many employees are affected or if all local positions will end. The organization declined to answer similar employment questions from Village Media journalists across other closed locations.
  • External communications specialist Olivia Hodgkiss stated CAA's commitment to member support remains unchanged as the organization adapts to consumer preferences. The company thanked the Sault Ste. Marie community for their loyalty and the relationships built over decades of service.
