Following an investigation, water company Vitens has likely found the cause of the water contamination in the Amersfoort region in late 2025 and January 2026: leakage through aging concrete in the basement where the water was stored. However, “no definitive cause has been established” that led to the discovery of the enterococcus bacterium.
The contamination of drinking water in the Amersfoort region around the turn of the year was caused by damage to the concrete of a drinking water reservoir. Water company Vitens determined this following its own investigation.
