Three Arrested in Baruipur Minor's Rape-Murder Case; CM Promises Justice
Police are investigating the girl’s death and the lynching after protests blocked roads, halted trains for about an hour and burned vehicles, officials said.
On Sunday, violent protests erupted in Baruipur, West Bengal, after the body of a 12-year-old girl was recovered from a pond. An angry mob lynched a 26-year-old man suspected of involvement in her death.
The girl went missing Saturday evening after leaving home to buy food, according to her family, who alleged four people forcibly took her away. Her body was discovered Sunday morning inside a sack in the Surjyapur Haat area.
Blocking the Baruipur-Joynagar Road and railway tracks for five hours, furious residents disrupted train services. Protesters hurled stones at police, damaging vehicles and injuring several officers who faced stiff resistance while attempting to rescue the lynching victim.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the victim's father on Sunday, promising strict punishment for the accused. Presidency Range Inspector-General Kankarprasad Barui urged residents to maintain peace, stating, "We have taken cognisance of the incident. We assure that strict action will be taken."
A large security contingent has been deployed, and a Special Investigation Team is probing both the girl's death and the subsequent lynching. Investigators are examining those involved in attacks on officers while security remains tightened across the area.
