Our New and Improved Comments Section - Join the Conversation

THE Leigh Journal's new platform uses automated and human moderation with badges and alerts to foster safer, more engaging reader and journalist discussions.

  • Across several local titles, editors rolled out upgraded comment systems, including THE Leigh Journal, YourLocalGuardian and Isle of Wight County Press, introducing moderation to enhance user experience.
  • The publisher says the change aims to boost discussion quality by encouraging meaningful conversations and editors said a minority abused the old system, so moderators will police comments.
  • The upgrade combines software filters with live moderation, using automated moderation software to block abusive comments while human moderators enforce community rules.
  • Readers are encouraged to join the comments and share feedback, while subscribers and newsroom staff will be marked with badges to identify contributors.
  • The upgrade adds follow-and-alert features and personal hide/block controls, implemented through a partnership with Viafoura, an industry-leading website comments platform.
