Stone tools from the Paleolithic period, about 42,300 years ago, were discovered at the Kanmuri ruins in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Until now, stone tools from about 37,000 years ago excavated at the Ishinomoto ruins in Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City, were considered to be among the oldest, but this was discovered 5,000 years earlier.
