Otter family turns Beach Avenue into a wildlife crosswalk in Oak Bay
The family briefly halted traffic as onlookers watched the pups pause in the road before continuing safely on their way.
Just after 9 a.m. on Saturday, a mother river otter led three pups across Beach Avenue near Willows Beach, halting traffic as cyclists and pedestrians paused to watch the family cross.
River otters are commonly seen along Greater Victoria shorelines, often mistaken for sea otters; unlike their ocean-dwelling cousins, these animals spend significant time on land.
While the mother confidently led the crossing, the three pups bunched together in the street in what appeared to be a brief embrace. Moments later, the mother darted back across the road on a reconnaissance mission.
Oak Bay News photographer Tony Trozzo documented the charming encounter, which drew smiles from onlookers before the family safely continued on its way.
Separately, the Metchosin animal rehab center recently celebrated World Otter Day with a pup release, reflecting active wildlife populations that Celebrate Greater Victoria continues to monitor across the region.
