Oscar Piastri McLaren breakthrough despite 'crap' Spanish GP lap
Oscar Piastri qualified for the Spanish Grand Prix in MADRID on Saturday, though the Australian's 2026 title hopes are effectively over as he pivots focus to a 2027 championship challenge.
Attributing his struggles to technical car differences, Piastri said, "the biggest thing this year has been the cars are very different to drive." He denied any mental hangover from last year.
McLaren aims to beat Ferrari for the constructors' runner-up spot while Mercedes leads by 122 points. Piastri said the team has "a reasonable chance of trying to beat Ferrari."
Teammate Lando Norris secured the leading position at the MADRID circuit, where overtaking proved difficult. Piastri conceded his final qualifying lap was "pretty crap" after losing rhythm early in the session.
The Australian remains determined to secure race wins this year to aid development. "I'm as best prepared as I can for next year," Piastri said.
