Orlando selected as host city for 2028 Olympic qualifier series
The International Olympic Committee announced Thursday that Orlando will host the final stop of the Olympic Q-Series in June 2028, joining Tokyo, Shanghai, and Montreal as sites determining the final wave of Olympic athletes.
To secure the bid, Orange County authorized $15 million in tourist-tax dollars for staffing and security, while the qualifying events center on Camping World Stadium, undergoing a $400 million renovation.
Jason Siegel, CEO of the Greater Orlando Sports Commission, said 600 athletes from over 150 nations will compete in sports including BMX freestyle and flag football to determine 100 final spots for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings noted the selection proves Orlando's "economic vitality," a sentiment supported by a report showing a record 76.7 million visitors to Central Florida in 2025.
The Q-Series, launched by the IOC in 2024, precedes the Summer Olympics starting July 14, 2028, in Los Angeles, with Montreal hosting the third circuit stop from June 1 to 4, 2028.
