Shampoo recalled over possible harmful bacteria, FDA says

Kao USA said the affected bottles were made in late February and may pose infection risks for people with weakened immune systems.

  • On July 1, Cincinnati-based Kao USA voluntarily recalled specific lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in the U.S. and Canada after detecting Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in the product.
  • The recall is limited to 8.5 oz and 33.8 oz sizes manufactured between Feb. 21 and Feb. 26, 2026; consumers can verify affected lots using UPC codes 840035231242 and 840035231273 printed on bottle bottoms.
  • Although the Food and Drug Administration notes Pluralibacter poses little risk to healthy individuals, those with weakened immune systems face potential respiratory, urinary tract, or bloodstream infections from the bacteria.
  • Regardless of health status, Kao USA urges consumers to stop using the shampoo and contact the Kao Professional Hair Technical Hotline at 800-333-2442 to arrange product replacements or refunds.
  • Kao USA is investigating the scope of the issue while working with partners to review manufacturing practices and "help prevent similar issues in the future," the company stated.
