Organizational AI use grows eightfold, yet governance gap remains: survey
Nearly three-quarters of respondents use AI weekly, but only 45% report a formal policy and 34% say their organization has training or a strategy.
On Wednesday, CPA Canada reported that organizational AI use among 5,000 professionals jumped from 5% in 2023 to 43% in 2026. Nearly three-quarters of CPAs now use AI weekly in their work.
Despite rapid integration, governance lags significantly: while 67% of respondents access approved AI tools, only 45% report formal AI policies and just 34% have implemented employee training or strategy.
Frequent users cite tangible improvements in productivity , analysis and problem-solving , and ability to focus on higher-value work . Organizations prioritize upskilling employees over reducing headcount .
Accountants are positioning themselves as central architects of AI deployment, with four in 10 CPAs reporting involvement in governance decisions. CPA Canada is now advocating for stronger federal AI safeguards and a clear legislative path.
Globally, 91% of technology leaders say AI adoption outpaces governance, according to a separate Thoughtworks survey. Chief Technology Officer Rachel Laycock noted, "AI governance is also a workforce design issue.
