OREGON, UNITED STATES, JUL 18 – The Microplastics Safety Act mandates the FDA to study microplastics’ effects on cancer, chronic illness, endocrine and reproductive health, with a report to Congress due within one year.
- Thursday U.S. Rep. Janelle Bynum and Sen. Jeff Merkley introduced the Microplastics Safety Act, requiring FDA study of microplastic health impacts.
- A February University of New Mexico study links microplastic exposure to dementia, while the FDA claims no evidence of health threats and no federal study addresses these impacts.
- The three-page bill mandates Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Health and Human Services Secretary, through FDA Commissioner, to identify microplastic exposure sources and report to Congress within one year.
- Sen. Rick Scott called it `a critical step toward understanding the full scope of these risks`, while Jeff Merkley warned microplastics threaten human health and the environment.
