Orbán Livestreams Ex-Minister Heading to Prosecutors in $53m Grant Probe
Former culture minister Balázs Hankó left Parliament for the prosecutor’s office on Monday evening after receiving a formal summons in a culture grant misuse investigation. His immunity had been suspended hours earlier, clearing the way for proceedings over the alleged misuse of more than $52.7 million in grants, which Hankó and Fidesz denounce as politically motivated.
The leaders of Fidesz and KDNP held a press conference before the parliament granted Hankó and Seszták immunity. János Bóka and Bence Rétvári outbid each other and promised compensation,
The National Assembly voted to suspend the immunity of Balázs Hankó. The proposal was supported by 139 MPs, with no votes against or abstentions.
The granting of the former minister's immunity is "another manifestation of the emerging neo-communist tyranny," says the Fidesz presidency in a statement.
Fidesz stands by Balázs Hankó, whose immunity will be discussed by the National Assembly on Monday. The party speaks of a political showdown.
