OpenAI's new AI model's access granted to some Japanese banks
The model is limited to trusted partners as Japanese lenders and regulators seek to counter AI-enabled hacking, officials said.
On Friday, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama announced that OpenAI granted access to its GPT-5.5 model to Japan's three largest banks—MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, and Mizuho Bank—to enhance cybersecurity defenses.
Advanced AI models capable of high-level coding have created significant cybersecurity risks, as hackers increasingly use these tools to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in financial systems and software.
Sources suggest the model is comparable to Anthropic's Claude Mythos, currently limited to about 50 companies, and Japanese banks are expected to employ this technology to probe their own systems for security weaknesses.
Katayama described the access as a "big step forward" in strengthening financial defenses, speaking to reporters in Tokyo after meeting Jason Kwon, OpenAI's chief strategy officer.
Japan established a public-private working group to address cybersecurity risks posed by models like Mythos, while Anthropic plans to offer broader access to its own technology in the coming weeks.
