OpenAI's First Device Is A $300-Plus Smart Speaker

OpenAI is developing a portable, doughnut-shaped smart speaker roughly the size of a hockey puck, designed in partnership with former Apple design chief Jony Ive using premium metal construction.
The device features "moving parts that help give it personality" alongside cameras and sensors, enabling it to function as an AI-fueled companion supporting humanlike voice interactions similar to ChatGPT.
OpenAI discussed pricing the speaker between $300 and $400, significantly exceeding Amazon's smart speaker range of $40 to $240, yet smart speakers have historically struggled to achieve profitability.
On Thursday, OpenAI filed a motion to dismiss Apple's lawsuit, arguing the complaint frames "ordinary conduct" out of context and asserting it is "building something entirely new and different from anything at Apple."
OpenAI plans to unveil the device later this year ahead of a 2027 release, positioning it as one of "roughly five different products" currently in development across the company's hardware division.
