OpenAI to Offer UK Data Residency Driven by Government Partnership
The UK government’s AI data residency option supports privacy, cyber resilience, and boosts AI use in public services like the Ministry of Justice, officials said.
- On Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor David Lammy announced OpenAI will store data on British soil for the first time under a Ministry of Justice partnership, available from Friday.
- Built into the UK government's AI Action plan, the July partnership with the Ministry of Justice is part of a strategy that, along with 14 billion in private sector investment, aims to strengthen the UK's AI position.
- UK data residency will apply to API Platform, ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Edu, with MoJ pilots prompting interest and ChatGPT workspace storing customer content at rest including files and custom GPTs.
- MoJ officials report that AI tools have cut burdensome administration, freeing frontline staff to monitor offenders, while civil servants use ChatGPT as UK usage grew fourfold in the past year.
- The development could accelerate a shift to AI-driven search as OpenAI competes with Anthropic, Perplexity, Google and Microsoft in the evolving AI market.
