OpenAI Is Shutting Down the ChatGPT Atlas Browser only Months After Its Release

On Thursday, OpenAI confirmed it is "sunsetting" ChatGPT Atlas, its dedicated browser, while releasing an upgraded desktop app that integrates browser-native agent capabilities directly into ChatGPT.
CEO of applications Fidji Simo directed the team to reduce "side quests," leading the company to conclude that an independent browser was a feature rather than a standalone destination.
The new ChatGPT Work suite runs on the advanced GPT-5 model and features a Chrome extension allowing users to query webpages or perform multi-step tasks without leaving their browser.
These updates position ChatGPT as a direct competitor to Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude Cowork, both offering similar context-aware browsing features for enterprise users.
Both firms are preparing for possible public offerings soon while aggressively expanding enterprise business to capture rising demand for autonomous agents capable of completing complex tasks.
