OpenAI to buy cybersecurity startup Promptfoo to better safeguard AI agents

  • On Monday, March 9, 2026 OpenAI announced it acquired Promptfoo, said Promptfoo's team will join, and plans to integrate its technology into Frontier after the deal closes.
  • Promptfoo's tools will help Frontier perform automated red-teaming as OpenAI acquired Promptfoo to bolster security for agentic AI, addressing enlarged attack surfaces in production systems exploited by bad actors.
  • Promptfoo's user base and funding show more than 125,000 developers, 30-plus Fortune 500 companies, 11 employees, and $22.68 million raised with an $85.50 million valuation as of July 2025.
  • OpenAI said it will continue building Promptfoo's open-source project under its current licence while sectors like retail, telecoms, financial services, and media face acute risks, impacting Frontier customers including Uber, State Farm, Intuit, and Thermo Fisher Scientific.
  • The acquisition positions OpenAI as a direct entrant into AI application security, folding the toolset into Frontier as rivals like Anthropic launched Claude Code Security in February.
