OpenAI Poaches Uber India Chief to Lead Its Biggest Market Outside the U.S.
The former Uber India and South Asia president will oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, and policy as OpenAI expands in its second-largest market.
On Friday, OpenAI appointed former Uber India and South Asia president Prabhjeet Singh as its first managing director for India. Singh will join OpenAI in September after resigning from Uber.
Building on its New Delhi office opened last August, OpenAI has planned expansions to Mumbai and Bengaluru. The company previously hired former Twitter India head Rishi Jaitly and former Truecaller and Meta executive Pragya Misra to strengthen local operations.
India has emerged as a critical battleground for AI firms due to its massive developer base and surging demand for generative AI. OpenAI has secured partnerships with conglomerates Reliance and Tata Group while expanding its data center involvement.
Reporting to Asia-Pacific managing director Kiran Mani, Singh will oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, and regulatory engagement across India. His appointment marks OpenAI's latest investment in scaling operations within the country.
Rival Anthropic scales its Indian presence after opening a Bengaluru office in late 2025 and appointing former Microsoft India managing director Irina Ghose to lead operations earlier this year. The competitive intensity signals growing strategic importance of India for AI companies.
