The Connector Era Is over: You Can Now Submit ChatGPT Apps to OpenAI

On December 17, OpenAI opened submissions for third-party ChatGPT apps and launched an App Directory accessible from the sidebar and at chatgpt.com/apps, enabling 800 million+ users to discover new apps.
Building on the GPT Store debut, OpenAI expanded pilot partners from a curated group to dozens and introduced the Apps SDK at DevDay in October to grow its developer ecosystem.
Users can trigger apps by @ mentioning them or selecting them from the tools menu, and apps extend chats by pulling live data, rendering interfaces, or taking actions without leaving the chat.
Developers submit apps via the OpenAI Developer Platform, where only one version is reviewed at a time and listings must meet quality, safety, and privacy standards with directory listing and testing guidance.
OpenAI says it discloses data types and privacy policies when users connect apps, but it has not clarified data retention or training use, raising scrutiny as monetization limits remain.
