OpenAI Identifies Security Issue Involving Third-Party Tool, Says User Data Was Not Accessed
OpenAI said no user data was accessed and that older Mac app versions will stop working after May 8 unless users update.
- On Friday, OpenAI identified a security issue involving the third-party developer tool Axios and is taking steps to protect the process that certifies its Mac applications as legitimate.
- Axios, a widely used third-party developer library, was compromised on March 31 as part of a broader software supply chain attack believed to be linked to North Korea.
- This attack led a GitHub Actions workflow to execute a 'malicious' version of Axios, which had access to signing materials for ChatGPT Desktop, Codex, Codex-cli, and Atlas.
- OpenAI wrote that it is "updating our security certifications," requiring all Mac users to update their apps to the latest versions to prevent any risk of fake applications.
- Effective May 8, older versions of these Mac apps will no longer receive updates or support and may become non-functional, the ChatGPT maker stated.
