OpenAI's Atlas Browser Doesn't Make It to Its First Birthday

OpenAI is merging Atlas into ChatGPT Work, adding browser tools to a desktop app as it refocuses on productivity and competition.

  • OpenAI is shutting down ChatGPT Atlas, its AI-powered browser launched in October 2025, less than a year after debut. The Verge reports the company targets August 9 for deprecation.
  • The decision follows OpenAI's broader strategy to cut 'side quests' and refocus on productivity to compete with Anthropic. The Wall Street Journal reported the company wants a desktop 'superapp' consolidating ChatGPT and Codex.
  • OpenAI confirmed the closure alongside ChatGPT Work, a new desktop app bundling its tools. Its James Sun said new capabilities were built on lessons from users who "took a leap of faith on a new browser."
  • This consolidation follows recent discontinuations of the Sora video app and a shelved ChatGPT 'adult mode.' The shifts reflect OpenAI's pivot toward integrated productivity tools over experimental interfaces.
  • The agentic-browsing market remains crowded, with Perplexity's Comet and Anthropic's Claude competing for dominance. Researchers recently demonstrated that AI browsers, including Atlas, could be tricked into leaking user credentials.
