OpenAI releases open-weight reasoning models optimized for running on laptops
UNITED STATES, AUG 6 – OpenAI offers two open-weight models under Apache 2.0 license enabling local and cloud deployment with performance comparable to proprietary systems at significantly lower cost.
- On August 2, 2025, OpenAI released two open-weight language models named gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b on HuggingFace and other platforms.
- OpenAI delayed this release several times and designed the models to balance usefulness and safety while responding to growing open source competition.
- The models are based on an architecture that selectively engages 12 out of 64 specialized sub-networks, can be run on consumer-grade devices or a single Nvidia 80GB GPU, and demonstrate strong performance on reasoning tasks.
- OpenAI said it conducted extensive safety training, filtered harmful data, and found no malicious fine-tuned model reached the 'high capability' threshold in its Preparedness Framework.
- This release aims to enable broader AI research and customization while OpenAI prepares for the anticipated GPT-5 launch expected later in August 2025.
