OpenAI and Taiwan’s Foxconn to partner in AI hardware design and manufacturing in the US
OpenAI and Foxconn will co-develop AI server hardware at Foxconn’s U.S. plants to secure supply chains and support growing AI infrastructure demand, said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
- On Thursday, OpenAI and Taiwan's Foxconn announced a U.S. partnership to design and build AI data center components, using Foxconn's facilities in Wisconsin, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Indiana to secure long-term capacity.
- OpenAI's infrastructure buildout and dealmaking drive the partnership, with Foxconn diversifying into EVs and electronics, adding a U.S. manufacturing layer this month.
- Co-Developing multiple generations of AI servers, OpenAI and Foxconn will manufacture core components including cabling, networking, power and cooling systems, with OpenAI having early access and no purchase commitments.
- Foxconn reported quarterly gains, with net profit rising to just over 57.6 billion new Taiwan dollars, and shares rose 25% this year, despite investor concerns.
- History and sector alliances frame this deal: Foxconn's 2018 Wisconsin flat-panel project failed, now hosting an AI data center, amid ties to Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom, as OpenAI's dealmaking blitz intensifies.
