OpenAI and Microsoft team up with state law enforcers on AI safety task force | News Channel 3-12
The task force aims to create voluntary AI safety guardrails and coordinate enforcement to address risks including harm to children, amid growing regulatory gaps.
- On Monday, North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson and Utah Attorney General Derek Brown announced a bipartisan AI Task Force partnered with OpenAI and Microsoft.
- Facing a regulatory vacuum, state officials moved before federal action arrived as Jackson and Brown earlier this year helped remove a proposed 10-year moratorium on state AI enforcement.
- The task force will focus on three things: working with law enforcement, experts and stakeholders to identify emerging AI issues, developing basic safeguards for AI developers, and creating a standing forum.
- Although voluntary, the guardrails could facilitate joint action by states, as state attorneys general note the task force eases coordinated enforcement and OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon expressed gratitude for the collaboration.
- Amid diverging company approaches and rising concerns in recent months, Jackson warned `AI is moving fast, and so are the risks` while Microsoft's AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman differ on adult content policies.
