OpenAI and Broadcom Partner on AI Hardware

The 10 GW deployment will power AI data centers globally, reducing OpenAI’s reliance on Nvidia and addressing rising demand and supply bottlenecks, analysts say.

  • Monday, October 14, 2025, OpenAI and Broadcom announced a multi-year partnership to develop and deploy 10 GW of AI accelerators and networking systems.
  • Facing supply constraints, OpenAI sought custom chips to deploy 10 GW between 2026 and 2029 and reduce reliance on NVIDIA while diversifying suppliers including AMD and Broadcom.
  • OpenAI will design the accelerators and system architecture to embed model insights, while Broadcom will develop hardware and provide Ethernet, PCIe, and optical connectivity for racks deploying in OpenAI and partner data centers starting in 2026.
  • Broadcom shares jumped on the news, surging more than 9% on Monday and adding over $150 billion to market value as the deal promises to boost revenue and deepen AI infrastructure roles.
  • At scale, 10 GW equates to powering more than 8 million U.S. households, and Financial Times estimated costs between $350 billion and $500 billion, highlighting OpenAI's near $1 trillion commitments.
