Ontario selects Hydro One to build new priority transmission line between Sudbury and Barrie

Hydro One will construct a 300 km, 500-kV line to address transmission bottlenecks, supporting up to 1,500 MW north and 1,000 MW south, powering industry and homes.

  • On Feb. 9, 2026, the province directed the OEB to designate Hydro One to develop and construct a new single-circuit 500-kV transmission line from Hanmer Transformer Station, Sudbury, to Essa Transformer Station near Barrie, expected in service by 2032.
  • Rising demand in Northern Ontario, including projections of an 81 per cent increase by 2050, and mining expansion with potential 41 new mines by 2033 prompted the plan.
  • The province directed the OEB to amend Hydro One's transmission licence to start Phase 2 development, designate the project as a priority for streamlined approvals, and enable collaboration with proximate First Nations.
  • The project will add capacity delivering up to 1,500 MW north and 1,000 MW south, powering 600,000 to one million homes and allowing proximate First Nations up to a 50 per cent equity stake.
  • Ontario and the Energy Corridor First Nations signed a December 2025 MOU to guide joint planning and engagement, while Phase 2 is in early development and the final route remains undetermined with consultations ongoing.
