Ontario Liberals set to pick byelection candidate amid jabs in nomination race
Nate Erskine-Smith’s bid has drawn scrutiny as rivals say the party should choose a local candidate before a byelection due by August.
Ontario Liberal members are choosing a candidate tomorrow for the Scarborough Southwest byelection in a contested nomination featuring federal MP Nate Erskine-Smith and several local contenders, with the byelection required by August.
The Scarborough Southwest riding became vacant after the former representative moved to federal politics, intensifying a nomination race reflecting the party's leadership search following Bonnie Crombie's resignation earlier this year.
Rivals including Qadira Jackson and Ahsanul Hafiz have questioned Erskine-Smith's residency and motives, with Jackson stating, "He has explicitly said that he ran here so that he can have a seat to run for leader."
Interim Liberal leader John Fraser characterized the race as "a regular, everyday nomination," dismissing friction as candidates Jackson and Hafiz coordinate ranked ballot strategies to secure the nomination.
With The Progressive Conservatives yet to name a candidate and The NDP selecting Fatima Shaban, the Liberal winner must mobilize quickly ahead of the mandatory August byelection in this compressed campaign.
