Ontario Expands Tariff Support Program Eligibility for Businesses
Premier Doug Ford says the province will widen loans and grants for affected industries to help cover payroll, leases and utility bills.
On Thursday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced expanded eligibility for the Protect Ontario Financing Program and the Ontario Together Trade Fund, providing immediate relief to businesses facing new U.S. tariffs and import bans.
President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian steel, dairy, and consumer goods, prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to launch dollar-for-dollar retaliatory measures in response.
Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy stated Ontario is delivering "nearly $30 billion in support for tariff-impacted workers and businesses," pledging the province will "do whatever it takes to protect Ontario jobs."
Addressing the Toronto Region Board of Trade, Ford defended the countertariffs as necessary "to show President Trump that Canada will stand up for itself" regarding $28 billion of U.S. imports.
Starting September 15, new U.S. tariffs of 50 per cent take effect, followed by additional import bans on September 29 that officials have described as "unjustified import bans," ensuring companies can apply for support immediately.
