Ontario Announces $10M in New Skills Development Funding for Skilled Trades
Ontario is funding six training programs to help about 1,150 workers and jobseekers enter skilled trades as an ethics investigation continues.
- Labour Minister David Piccini announced yesterday that Ontario is investing $10 million into six programs through the Skills Development Fund to strengthen the provincial workforce in the skilled trades.
- Following last year's report finding the $2.5-billion fund lacked transparency in application selection, Integrity Commissioner Cathryn Motherwell is investigating allegations that Piccini breached ethics rules regarding funding distribution.
- Skills Ontario received nearly $1.2 million for a new program as part of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives. CEO Ian Howcroft stated the initiative aims to inspire youth and connect education, experience, and employment.
- About 1,150 workers and jobseekers will prepare for careers across major Canadian industries through the six programs. The new program from Skills Ontario will specifically support 250 individuals entering the skilled trades.
- The Government claims it has implemented changes for this round of funding, including requiring applications to disclose registered lobbyist use and analyzing individuals associated with applications, addressing transparency concerns.
