Nigeria: 14.5m Children Registered As Nigeria Pushes for Legal Identity for Every Child
Digital birth registration now reaches more than 6,000 wards as Nigeria links services to health facilities and community outreach.
- As Nigeria joined other African nations to mark Africa CRVS Day, the Federal Government reported that over 14.5 million children have been registered under an intensified birth registration drive to ensure every child has a legal identity.
- Current estimates indicate that only about half of children under five in sub-Saharan Africa are registered at birth, leaving the region with the largest share of unregistered children globally. Registration provides the first formal state recognition required to access healthcare and education.
- The National Population Commission disclosed that digital birth registration services are now available in more than 6,000 of the country's 8,809 wards, with registration increasingly linked to health facilities in states including Bayelsa, Gombe, and Jigawa.
- ALGON National President Hon. Bello Lawal stressed the importance of decentralizing registration, stating: "Decentralisation is essential to ensuring that children in remote and underserved communities are not left behind."
- UNICEF Representative in Nigeria Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef added that the organization will continue supporting integrated, digitalized systems, emphasizing: "Birth registration is far more than a certificate. It is a gateway to protection, services, and opportunity.
