UK Moves Forward with Social Media Ban
Ministers say the rules will protect children’s wellbeing, but details on enforcement, existing accounts and penalties remain unclear.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced plans to ban under 16s from social media, with Technology minister Liz Kendall calling it a "defining moment for our children" to "give them the freedom to be children again."
The ban emerges from sustained anxiety about children's mental health and political competition to appear "tough" on tech, with a YouGov survey showing about three quarters of Britons favor the measure.
Enforcement details remain unclear, with experts questioning whether VPNs can be blocked; Technology secretary Kendall admitted needing to return in July with solutions to address the gap.
Campaigner Ellen Roome called the ban "fantastic," while student Miguel Smith warned it could isolate disabled children; Professor Claire Haworth from the University of Bath cautioned against "over promising what a social media ban can do."
Evidence from Australia's December 2025 ban shows around 70 percent of under-16s still access restricted platforms, prompting the Molly Rose Foundation to warn the UK faces a "high stakes gamble" implementing similar rules.
