Ongoing elevator breakdowns a human rights issue, says Maple Ridge mother
Erica Forrest says six breakdowns since January have left her son stranded and her family missing medical appointments.
Erica Forrest filed a human rights complaint against Rockwell Management in Maple Ridge, citing persistent elevator breakdowns that threaten her family's safety and accessibility.
Six elevator breakdowns since January have left Forrest's son, who uses a wheelchair, trapped and unable to safely access their home during critical moments.
Forrest said, "If I leave, am I going to get back home," noting the outages caused missed medical appointments and persistent anxiety about leaving her apartment.
Rockwell Management has not returned calls, and despite Forrest's requests for a contingency plan, the landlord has remained unresponsive to her family's safety concerns.
Vancouver city council previously attempted to address elevator accessibility as a human rights issue, with the city's seniors advisory committee calling malfunctioning elevators "an immediate danger.
