Drivers to Bypass Hexham Bottlenecks by the End of Year
The $2.24 billion project is more than a year early, with 25,000 vehicles using the route on a normal day, officials said.
- The $2.24 billion M1 Raymond Terrace extension is moving more than a year ahead of schedule, with the northern section and Heatherbrae Bypass now complete; the full route opens in late 2026 after the Black Hill to Tomago section finishes.
- Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King said the project is "well and truly past the halfway mark." Funded by $1.79 billion from the federal government and $448 million from the NSW government, the road was initially expected to open in 2028.
- Crews recently finished the Hexham Straight widening, the Raymond Terrace interchange, the Masonite Road overpass, and a bridge at Windeyers Creek. Nearly 25,000 vehicles use the existing road daily, with traffic swelling during holiday periods.
- Stephens MP Kate Washington stated her community would "finally be able to say goodbye to the Hexham Bridge bottleneck," while NSW Roads Minister and Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison credited the early delivery to detailed planning and strong delivery partnerships.
- Once the extension opens, contractors will remain on-site for up to two years to monitor how the road adjusts to highway traffic, alongside performing landscaping and targeted maintenance for the region.
