One patient in critical condition following Ottawa River water rescue, paramedics say
Police say air and boat searches found the toddler, who was resuscitated and taken to hospital before dying.
A 2-year-old child died after being pulled from the Ottawa River on Friday night in what the Ottawa Police Service described as a 'heartbreaking' death following a water rescue operation.
Officers responded to reports of a missing child near the Kichi Zibi Mikan Parkway shortly before 7 p.m., prompting a search involving the Gatineau Police Service and marine dive teams.
Air support spotted the toddler about 40 minutes after the initial call in the Ottawa River, while search teams deployed drones and an airplane to scan the water and banks.
First responders and Ottawa Paramedics pulled the child from the water and began lifesaving efforts, but the toddler was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
Police homicide and child abuse units are investigating the death as standard practice, while support services have been offered to the family and first responders involved.
