Australian Far-Right One Nation Wins First Federal Lower House Seat in Farrer By-Election
David Farley won 59.3% of the vote, as One Nation’s first lower-house victory ended a 77-year Coalition hold on the rural seat, the ABC said.
- On Saturday, One Nation candidate David Farley won the federal Farrer by-election with 57.3% of the two-candidate-preferred vote, ending the Coalition's 77-year hold on the rural New South Wales seat.
- The by-election was triggered in February when former Liberal Party leader Sussan Ley resigned after being ousted by Angus Taylor, creating a vacancy in the seat held by the Coalition since 1949.
- Coalition support collapsed dramatically: the Liberal Party recorded 12.4% of the primary vote and the Nationals 9.8%, according to official results, compared to Ley's 43.4% primary in 2025.
- Treasurer Jim Chalmers described the result as a "bloodbath," increasing pressure on Liberal leader Angus Taylor as government officials suggest the Coalition may need to accommodate One Nation to govern.
- Party leader Pauline Hanson told Sky News on Sunday that One Nation is "here for the long haul," vowing to target more federal seats after securing its first lower house victory since 1997.
